Our Minneapolis Skyline is a muted version of the original mat. It evokes those mysterious, misty mornings when you round the curve on 35W and our stunning downtown skyline looms into view, low-hanging clouds hovering just over the tops of our iconic skyscrapers: the new AT&T building, the beautiful nouveau art deco Wells Fargo tower, Philip Johnson’s IDS Center, and the truly art deco Foshay Tower (once the tallest building between Chicago and the Pacific ocean.)
(Another fun fact: John Philip Sousa composed a march for the grand opening of the Foshay Tower in 1929 for the unheard-of price of $20,000 — $300,000 in today’s dollars — which was played only once. Six weeks after the building opened, Foshay’s business empire collapsed in the stock market crash, Foshay’s check bounced, and Sousa prohibited further performances of his composition until Foshay’s debt was paid. It wasn’t until 1988 that a group of Minnesota investors finally repaid Foshay’s debt to the Sousa estate and allowed the march to be played in public once again.)
